■学院概况:中央美术学院的前身是国立北平艺术专科学校和华大三部美术系。北平艺术专科学校的历史可以上溯到19l8年由著名教育家蔡元培积极倡导下成立的国立北京美术学校,这是中国历史上第一所国立美术教育学府,也是中国现代美术教育的开端,华北大学美术系的前身是1938年创建于延安的“鲁艺”美术系。
1950年4月,成立了中央美术学院。国家主席毛泽东题写了院名,徐悲鸿、江丰、吴作人、古元、靳尚谊先后担任院长。
按照党的教育方针和文艺方向,中央美术学院在探索有中国特色的社会主义美术教育中不懈努力, 把新型的革命美术思想与外来美术教育经验结合起来,把深入生活的创作实践和严谨扎实的基础训练结合起来,形成了高质量、高水平的教学传统和良好的学术风范。为国家培养了大量美术专业人才,他们中的许多人成为我国美术教育和创作的骨干力量。
中央美术学院名师荟萃,同时是我国美术创作和研究的一个重要中心。在20世纪各个历史时期,学院教师的创作和研究成果以优秀的学术质量产生了广泛的社会影响。
改革开放以来,中央美术学院积极进行教学改革、学术建设和教学管理体制改革,任保持原有优势 的基上,增加了适应国家现代化发展需求的新学科,积极开展了国际合作办学等对外交流活动,形成了多种专业齐头并进的教学格局。学院现有本科专业四个(绘画、雕塑、艺术设计、美术学)、硕士专业两个(美术学、设计艺术学)、博士专业一个(美术学);设有中国画、油画、版画、壁画、雕塑、设计、美术史7个系和造型艺术专业基础教部,并设有成人教育部、附属中等美术学校;全院每年招收中专生(附中)、专科生(成人教育)、本科生、硕士研究生、博士研究生和各类进修生,形成了多层次、多类型的完整、系统的美术教育体系。
学院教学实行学年学分制管理,本科学制为4年,(雕塑及环境艺术设计专业为5年),研究生学制 3年。本科生教学实行1年试读制,新生入学经过1年试读,考核合格方取得正式学籍。本科课程分为专业必修课、专业选修课、公共必修课、公共选修课4类。必修课与选修课的比例是7:3,专业课与公共课的比例同样也为7:3。4年制学分总量为133一138学分(5年制另加32学分),平均每学期修16-20学分。2年级以上学生每学期都有3周的时间可以跨系选修其它专业的课程。
中央美术院现有教授、副教授88名,讲师53名,在校本科生和研究生近千人。现任院长是著名国画家、美术史论家潘公凯教授,现任院学术委员会主任是著名油画家、全国政协常委、中国文联副主席、中国美术家协会主席靳尚谊教授,党委书记是扬力同志。
随着国家高等教育管理体制的改革,中央美术学院由原主管部委国家文化部划转为国家教育部管理,成为教育部直属唯一一所高等美术院校。并且对部分专业进行了“系”改“院”。2001年9月,作为国家“九五”期间重点文化事业建设项目的中央美术学院及附中新址落成。校园占地200亩,首期建筑面积,7.6万平方米,校园规模和办学条件在国际上堪称一流,为中央美术学院在新世纪的全面发展奠定了坚实的基础。

中国画、书法系
中央美术学院中国画系教学历史悠久,以艺术大师李可染、蒋兆和、叶浅予、李苦禅教授为代表的名师形成了有广泛影响的传统,师资力量雄厚。中国画系的第一任系主任是原中国美术家协会副主席、全国政协委员、著名人物画大师叶浅予教授。历任国画系主任的有丁井文、李琦、黄润华、姚有多、张立辰。在不断的教学改革中,中国画系逐步形成了比较科学和符合中国画艺术规律的现代教学体系与专业特色,培养了大批优秀人才,其中成为中国美术家协会副主席的就有周思聪、刘勃舒、刘大为、扬力舟。同时长年接收外国留学生,在传播中国文化,扩大中国民族绘画的影响方面发挥了重要作用。
全系现有教师3l人,其中教授10人、副教授13人、讲师6人,形成较完整的老、中、青相结合的教学和创作队伍。
中国画系坚持“吞吐古今、涉猎中外、立足传统、鼓励独创”的教学方针,实行“传统、生活、创作三结合”的教学原则及“临摹、写生、创作三位一体”的教学方法,2000年开始实行教授(导师)工作室的教学结构。现有教授(导师)工作室为:以探索中国画多样表现性为特征的李少文工作室;以水墨人物画为专业的韩国榛工作室;以工笔重彩人物画为专业的胡勃工作室;以山水画为专业的贾又福工作室;以花鸟画为专业的赵宁安工作室;以书法篆刻为专业的王镛工作室;以材料技法研究为特色的胡伟工作室。
●造型学院:
油画系中央美术学院油画系是中国油画教学的最早基地之一,从20世纪早期赴西欧和日本深造、谙熟欧洲油画传统的前辈师长,到有解放后派往前苏联留学的业务骨干,还有几十年来油画系历届毕业的本科生、研究生中的留校任教的优秀分子,形成了几代极具实力的教师队伍和创作队伍。培养出众多德才兼备的本科生、研究生、研修生,遍及全国,许多人都已成为知名画家、教授,成为各地油画及美术事业的骨干力量。油画系师生创作了大量作品,其中许多在社会上产生过重大影响,成为中国油画发展各个时期的代表作。中央美术学院油画系不论帅资力量、教学质量还是学生素质始终在全国同行中名列前茅。目前油画系设有四个画室和研究生部以及技法材料工作室,进行画室制教学。油画系现有教师18名,其中教授7人,副教授6人,讲师5人。
第一画室成为于1959年,先后由吴作人先生、艾中信先生主持,积累了丰富的教学经验和创作成就。80年代以来,一画室主持人靳尚谊先生,以更加冷静明确的教学思想主持工作,主张认真研究西方文艺复兴到后期印象主义之间的欧洲绘画传统,并认真学习中国的优秀绘画传统,在坚定的写实绘画的传统上走出新的艺术道路。在创作上主张积极深入生活,真诚、质朴、深刻地体现生活的审美价值。现任画室主任为孙为民教授。
第二画室成立于1959年,由罗工柳先生主持。80年代以来,由赵友萍先生、李天祥先生、杜键先生先后主持。在教学中注重把欧洲写实绘画的遗产与中国艺术传统相结合,特别是在色彩方面注重研究条件色写生方法以及这种方法在现、当代的新发展,强调严格的基础训练与学生的主动探索相结合。在创作上主张深入生活,在生动的生活感觉的基础上推敲锤炼,实现丰厚的艺术再现力。现任画室主任为戴士和教授。
第三画室成立于1959年,由董希文先生主持。80年代以来,由詹建俊先生主持。教学上主张开放式的灵活教学与严格的课业要求相结合,强调以艺术创作精神带动课堂习作,以主观艺术表现带动客观规律的运用。要求学生要在面向古今中外的发展历史,进行广收博采。同时强调培养学生建立个人的艺术视角。在教学中主张和实施“因材施教,顺水推舟”的教学原则,对学生的艺术个性进行培养。并强调对学生心灵中真、善、美精神的培养是艺术个性的基础。现任画室主任为谢东明副教授。
1985年,经当时油画系主任闻立鹏先生倡议创建第四画室,林岗先生为主作,葛鹏仁先生为副主任。1997年开始,袁运生先生接任画室主任。教学宗旨为以中国的现代化为理想,以现代艺术教育思想为核心,以新的传授机制为保障,以中国绘画传统为根基。立足中国、面向世界,培养中国新文化艺术的建设人才,发展现代的、中国的、有创造性的油画艺术。在教学中不仅要求学生掌握油画的技术与技巧,同时进行创新思维的教育,培养富有创造性与探索新知识能力的人才。
技法材料工作室成立于1994年。材料技法课程的进行方式是研究性的实践课,通过教学训练使学生在掌握一、两种表现方式的同时增长对油画传统文化,基础知识和对油画材料“质”的表现力的理解、判断、选择和运用等能力。
版画系中央美术学院版画系在历史上有李桦、古元、王琦、彦涵、黄永玉等教授任教。他们既是经验丰富的美术教育家,同时又是具有广泛影响的艺术家,他们具有示范意义的创作奠定了版画系教学的坚实基础,使版画系始终保持着较高的学术水准,在全国起着相当的倡导性作用。
版画系几代教师“薪火相传”,一直承传着认真治学和真诚洽艺的精神,在教学和创作上都充满了活力。版画系现有教师16名,其中教授、副教授共8名。版画系首任系主任是李桦教授,80年代中期以后至90年代中期,伍必端、宋源文、谭权书、广军教授曾先后担任版画系主任。
版画系设有木版、铜版、石版、丝网版画、书籍艺术工作室,90年代成立了摄影、传统版画工作室和研究生教学组,并正在筹建版画材料与新技术工作室,版画专业教学要求学生具备坚实的造型能力,掌握凸版、凹版、平版、孔版各版种的制作原理和方法,具备一专多能的专业素质和艺术功力。除版画专业教学外还设有构成、摄影、电脑制作、版画史、版画纸张材料等课程或讲座,使学生熟悉各种艺术表现语言,并重视在学习民族文化和继承版画艺术优秀传统的基础上吸收现代设计意识与艺术观念,鼓励学生深入生活,关注社会、表现时代精神。
壁画系中央美术学院壁画系是在中国改革开放的历史大潮中诞生的当代中国高等美术学院中第一个壁画专业系业系科。为适应城市公共环境建设迅猛发展的需求趋势,1979年初,在侯一民教授主持下,由李化吉、周令钊、梁运清、王文彬、邓澍等人参与筹建了壁画研究室。研究室自1980年开始招收本科生和研究生,1984年正式成立壁画系。历任系主任是侯一民、李化吉、梁运清教授,现任系主任孙景波教授,副系主任李林琢教授、曹力副教授。壁画系创建以来,为复兴中国壁画辉煌的历史传统,为吸取当代世界各国壁画与公共环境艺术的优长,在教学和创研实践中,不断总结经验教训,不断充实,调整学科知识结构,并在致力创造具有我们民族与时代特色的教学与创研实践中,逐步形成了自己的教学体系。同时成为这一专业领域内重要的创研实体。
壁画基础课程有:素描、线描、浮雕、色彩、平面、立体与色彩构成,壁画基础史论知识,环艺设计基础常识。壁画材料工艺课程有:油画材料技法,丙烯材料技法,中国重彩壁画技法,西方湿壁画技法,陶瓷材料工艺,金属与多种材料综合运用工艺。此外还有壁画环境艺术创作设计,壁画构图常识。
壁画专业课程的设置,不仅要求学生掌握一般的造型基础能力,还要具有更宽泛的艺术表现能力,以适应对公共艺术更广泛的需求和选择。壁画系教学注重对学生艺术审美品位的引导,注重对学生独立创作与设计能力的鼓励,每一学年都设置创作构图课和课外创作比赛,并专门设立了“壁画系优秀创作作品奖”。
从2001年秋季开始,壁画系教学向导师工作室制过渡。分别由孙景波教授主持第一工作室,李林琢教授主持第二工作室,曹力和陈文骥教授主持主持第三工作室。考虑到专业学科结构的特殊性,三个工作室在体现各自教学优长的同时,还将加强相互间的有机联系和课程内容的互补性, 使全系教学始终保持在一种立体化的整体结构中。
雕塑系雕塑系的教学主体曾有为以王临乙、滑田友、刘开渠、曾竹韶等为代表的留法归来的一代雕塑家。60年代以后,一批派往前苏联的留学生归来,充实和加强了现实主义教学的力量。活跃在教学一线的著名雕塑家有钱绍武、王克庆、董祖诒、曹春生,司徒兆光、盛扬等人。到80年代和90年代,又有孙家钵、张大生等新生力量不断改革的探索。特别在进入90年代后,抽象雕塑范畴中的现代材料语言体系也逐步纳入教学。
雕塑系教学旨在培养学生具备扎实的雕塑造型基本功的同时,初步掌握现代材料语言,掌握架上雕塑和公共环境雕塑乃至大型纪念性雕塑创作和制作技能。本科学制5年,研究生学制3年。
本科生的课程中,素描占总课程量的10%,内容有人像、人体等,包括速写;泥塑占32%,具体内容有头、胸像、人体、浮雕、衣纹及少量动物写生;材料课占19%,内容包括:浮雕构图,圆雕构图、肖像、园林雕塑、纪念碑。5年中的前4年,学生须修完上述基础与创作课程,第五年,学生以1年时间来完成自己的毕业创作。研究生的课程设置以导师指导下的创作研究为主,并根据每个人情况的不同,适当安排造型基础课,如人像、人体或其他现代材料课。
雕塑系现有教师15人,其中教授3人,副教授7人,讲师5人。现任系主任为隋建国教授,副主任为孙伟、段海康、吕品昌副教授。分设一、二、三、四工作室,近年新成立了现代材料工作室(下设金属工作室)、陶艺工作室、公共艺术工作室。
●人文学院:
美术史系中央美术学院美术史系创建于1957年,是新中国第一个培养美术史论专业人才的教学机构,也是中国美术史论的研究中心和对外交流中心之一。系筹委会主任是王逊教授,历任系主任有金维诺教授、薛永年教授,现任系主任为罗世平教授。美术史系具有授予多种学位层次的资格,可授予学位、硕士、博士学位。面向国内外招收本科生、硕士研究生、博士研究生、进修生,同时还接待高级访问学者。经过积累,美术史系以其雄厚的师资、严谨的学风、规范的教学,在全国乃至世界同行中享有盛誉。
按专业分为中国美术史教研室,外国美术史教研室,美术理论教研室并附设一个美术史论信息资料中心。
本科专业课程有中国古代美术史、中国近现代美术史、外国美术史、美术概论、美学原理、书画鉴定概论、中外画论概要、中国工艺美术史、中国文人画史、中外现代美术思潮研究、中国古代宗教美术、中国美学史、西方美术史、艺术心理学、艺术管理学等。硕士、博士研究生专业课设中国美术史学史(或中国美术史方法论)、西方美术史学史(或西方美术史研究方法沦)、中外美术交流与比较、美术原理及方法论研究(或美学专题选讲)、中国美术文物鉴定与考证(或美术考古学)、中国古代与近代美术史专题研究选讲(或外国古代与现代美术史专题选讲)。
面向2l世纪的教学和研究,美术史系提出了“保持优势、拓宽学科、改善环境、增进交流”的办系方计。
●设计学院、建筑学院:
设计系成立于1995年,培养目标是面向二十一纪的,具有创造思维与实践能力的设计人才。设计系下设四个专业方向:建筑与环境艺术专业,视觉传达专业,产品设计专业和摄影专业。1995开设了模型工作室,材料工作室,建造工作室,摄影工作室,纸桨工作室,电脑工作室和图书资料室。根据教学思想和学科发展的需要,2001年设立了十一个导师工作室。
设计系师资以知识结构新、学术思想活跃、大多留学海外的青年教师为主,同时聘有多名外籍学者为客座教授。
通过几年的努力探索,设计系在教学上基本形成了自己的特色。
设计系/学院基础课和强调设置及训练方法,在很大程度上区别于国内其他院校,通过丰富的训练课题,启发和引导学生创造性地理解艺术与设计的关系,掌握具象与抽象造型语言的表现规律,养成提出问题的习惯和学会思考的方法。主要课程:自然形态基础,抽象形态基础,构成基础,材料实验基础,综合练习。
建筑与环境艺术设计专业/建筑学院,它的教学内容以建筑设计为主,向外延伸至小区规划和公共环境设计,向内延伸至室内及产品设计。教学特色相对于公学院的建筑专业来说,压缩了建筑学科中的工程、力学、物理方面的课时,加强了环境、建筑、室内设计能力训练;对于艺术学院的环艺专业/建筑学院而言,加强了环境与建筑、室内整体综合设计的能力。学制为五年。主要课程:空间训练,建筑设计,外部环境设计,室内设计,中外建筑史。
随着设计系的不断发展以及现代设计人才的需要,中央美术学院决定成立设计学院。设计学院在原有设计系基础上建立新的教学结构,开设新的课程和专业方向,扩大招生规模,以全新的理念定位和运做方式始终保持中央美术学院的教学特色和可持续发展的态势。
电脑美术工作室成立于1993年3月,是全国高等美术院校中最早开展电脑美术教学的单位。8年多来在学术研究和创作实践诸方面取得了丰硕了成果。工作室除负责全院本科生的电脑美术选修课外,还培训了来自全国各省、市、自治区3000多名电脑美术和广告制作人才。工作室开设的课程有电脑平面设计、电脑三维造型和动画、网页设计、非线性视频后期编辑等。工作室师生编写的专著和教材有近二十种,创作的电脑美术作品多次在各种展览和竞赛中获奖。工作室同时发起组织了首届高等美术院校电脑美术教学座谈会,为总结交流高校电脑美术教学的经验作出了努力。工作室是美国AUTODESK公司指定的授权培训中心,是日本CANON公司指定的彩色打印中心。1997年工作室荣获北京地区普通高等学校教学成果二等奖。
●附属机构:
附属中等美术学校[美术学院附中]创办于1953年。1954年,首任校长丁井文随中国美术教育考察团访问前苏联,考察学习了莫斯科美术学校(现苏里科夫美术学院)、列宁格勒美术学校(现列宾美术学院)附属中等美术学校的教育经验,带回了他们的学生作品和教学大纲,对附中以至后来全国陆续举办的美术学院附中的办学产生了深远的影响,奠定了坚实的基础。几十年来,附中培养出1300多名学生,成为大学优秀生源的重要保证,也为社会输送了大量基础扎实、知识面宽、适应力强的中等美术人才。
美术学院附中学制四年,课程设置的基本思想是重视基础,重视文化课的学习,重视文化艺术的修养,努力培养学生关注社会,观察生活与自然,养成艺术思考的习惯,培养生动活泼、新鲜敏锐的艺术感受和艺术创作能力。专业课内容有素描、速写、色彩、创作、设计、透视、解剖、中国画、书法。进入高年级后,根据学生选报情况设有国画、油画、壁画、版画、雕塑、平面设计、环境设计等专门选修课。文化课采用普通高中教材,重点学习普通高中语文、历史、地理、英语、政治等文科类课程,在2年级和4年级安排有社会艺术实践,其中4年级在社会艺术实践中还兼有传统文化考察内容。
附中面向全国招收年龄不超过17周岁的初中毕业生和高中1年级在校学生,于每年4月底、5月初在本校自主命题举行专业和文化考试。专业考试科目为素描、速写、色彩、创作,文化考试科目为语文、外语、数学。2007年恢复口试及美术理论加试,由教育部和北京市中招办批准录取。入学后第1年为试读期,期满成绩合格后取得正式学籍。
附中图书馆现有藏书8万多册,教学资料室收藏有从50年代以来的留校优秀学生作业,毕业创作以及一批精彩的国外美术院校学生作业。2001年9月,作为国家“九五”计划期间重点文化事业建设项目的中央美术学院及附中朝阳花家地新址落成。2005年4月美院买进北京东燕郊205亩土地,建设新校舍73000㎡作为新校区,2007年完工。德国包豪斯风格的新校有教学楼、多媒体教室、图书馆、阅览室、200米跑道、小足球场、500人阶梯教室等,为在新世纪的发展获得了更大的空间和提供了良好的物质条件。
半个世纪以来,附中为本院及其它高等艺术院校培养后备生和直接向社会输送大批中等美术人才,他们遍布在全国各个工作岗位,活跃于海内外,在高等艺术教育、中等美术教育、艺术创作、影视创作和导演、戏剧美术基层文化工作、新闻出版、服装设计、民间艺术研究、 党和政府的宣传文化领导工作等领域取得了引人瞩目的成就,涌现出众多优秀人才,被誉为:“艺术家的摇篮”。
继续教育学院在多年开展培训教育的基础上,为了发挥教学优势,满足社会需求,服务于终身教育的目标,学院自2000年起正式开办成人学历教育并筹建成人教育部。现有专、兼职教师十余名,下设绘画、设计两个教研室。目前开办有绘画、设计两个专业脱产专科班及脱产专科升本科班,学制两年,有学生200余人,今后将逐步开办多种形式的成人教育。
学报编辑部编辑出版学报《美术研究》与《世界美术》。两刊均为国家级专业刊物,《美术研究》1957年创刊,《世界美术》1979年创刊。
《美术研究》自创刊以来,以严肃的高品味学术形象,得到国内外广大读者的认可。侧重反映中央美术学院教学与创作成果,研究国内外美术教育、美术创作、美术史论、艺术思潮。近年来更加强了对当代艺术现状、艺术教育改革、当代视觉文化与现代设计艺术的研究,是一个全方位探索美术教育和美术发展规律的专业刊物。
《世界美术》在改革开放的历史条件下创办,是国内唯一一份研究、译介外国美术的专业期刊,以专业性、信息性、理论性为宗旨,研究外国美术史论,反映国际艺术最新动态,翻译介绍学术名著,追踪当代视觉文化前沿。是国内发行量最大的美术刊物之一。
图书馆建筑馆历史悠久,是国内藏书最多的馆舍最大、藏书最多的美术专业图片馆,建筑面积近5000平方米。截止到2000年底,馆藏图书资料已逾30万册(页),并形成了以中外美术专业书刊为主、社会科学类图书为辅的藏书特色。特藏图书资料有木版年画、插图本线装古籍、汉代石刻画像拓片、历代碑贴、原拓印谱等,欧美、日本等国出版的原文美术专业图书、精印画页也占有很大比例。本馆是国内美术院校中少数几所享受国家划拔文科专款的图书馆之一。此外,每年还接受大量国内外社会团体、出版事业单位、社会贤达及本院教师的赠送,图书为源丰富了,馆藏资源深厚。
本馆现设有艺术图书、社科书刊、多媒体、社科专款图书阅览室,基本上采取开架、半开架的借阅方式,图书流通已全部实现自动化管理,并设有局域网,采集中外美术信息,提供电子图书阅读,较高程度地满足读者需求。
美术馆原为中央美术学院陈列馆,建立于60年代初期,位于王府井大街中央美术学院旧址。并在新校址设立临时展厅。主要服务于学院各类教学活动,每年定期举办在校生成绩展、本科生与研究生毕业作品展、教师作品展等,除了各类教学展览之外还举办各类馆藏展、国内外美术交流展等,成为北京地区重要美术展馆之一。除了展示功能之外,几十年来形成了丰富、系统的馆藏,主要包括:中国古代书画、近现代中国书画、民间美术、中外油画、版画、雕塑以及部分中国古代壁画临本等,建院以来历届学生的优秀作品展更是收藏的重点,这些藏品体现了独特的学术价值,并反映了美术教育进程的特色。
雕塑艺术创作研究所成立于1954年,至今已有40余年的历史。
雕研所拥有国内规模最大的、设施最为完善的雕塑场所,总面积达5893平米。有高达15米、占地648平米的雕塑放大车间、可直接在里面放大制作雕塑模型,同时拥有30余间小型雕塑工作室。雕研所下设展厅、阅览室、资料室、摄影室等部门,现有研究员16名,副研究员12名,助理研究员5名。他们的雕塑作品参加了各种国际性的雕塑大赛和活动,在国内、国际荣获大奖60多次,并应邀为国内外设计创作大型雕塑百余件,在中国当代雕塑创作与研究中发挥着重要作用。

■Introduction:to the Central Academy of Fine Arts
The predecessors of the Centrai Academy of Fine Arts were the National Beiping Art School and the Fine Arts epartment of Huabei University. The history of the National Beiping Art School may date back to the National Beijing Art School founded in 1918 under the initiative of Mr. Cai Yuanpei, a famous educator, which was the first nationai art education institution in China's history and the beginning of modern art education in China. The predecessor of Huabei University was the Fine Arts Department of the ''Luxun Literature and Art University'' founded in Yan'an in 1938.
In April 1950, the Centrai Academy of Fine Arts came into being incorporating the National Beiping Art School and the Fine Arts Department of Huabei University. Chairman Mao Zedong inscribed the name of the academy. Xu Beihong, Jiang Feng, Wu Zuoren, Cu Yuan and Jin Shangyi were presidents of CAFA successiveiy.
In line with the educational guidelines and art and literature orientation of the Party, CAFA seeks to expiore an art education with Chinese Characters, combines the tradition of the new revolutionarY art with foreign art education experiences and combines the creation practice into life with a soild foundation training. A high quality, high ievei educational tradition and a fine academic style have taken shape and a great number of art professionais have been trained in the academy, who have become the backbone force in art education and creation in China. in the meantime, being an institution with many masters, CAFA is one of the most important centers of China in art creation and research. In different historicai periods of the 20th century, the creation and research achievements of the teachers of the academy, with excellent academic quality, have produced wide social impact.
Since China's openingup and reform process began, CAFA has actively conducted the teaching reform and the reforms on academic construction and teaching management system. On the basis of the originai advantages, new subjects that meet the requirements of the modernization of the China have been added, international exchanges such as international cooperative teaching have been activeiy pursued, and a teaching pattern of many specialties developing together has been formed. Currently there are undergraduate specialties (painting, sculpture, art design and art study), two graduate specialties (art study, design art study) and one doctorate specialty (art study) in CAFA with seven departments, namely, the Chinese Painting Department, the Oil Painting Department, the Printmaking Department, the Mural Painting Department, the Design Department and the Art History Department,as well as the Department of Plastic Arts Foundation Study, the Adult Education Division and the Affiliated High School of Fine Arts. CAFA has formed a multilayer, multitype and complete art education system with the enrollment covering special secondary school students, three-year college students (adult education), undergraduate students,graduate students, doctorate students and students for advanced studies.
CAFA undertakes academic year and credit management. The length of schooling for under graduate students is 4 years (5 years for sculpture and environment art design), the length of schooling of graduate students is 3years. The undergraduate students must undergo a oneyear trial period, and can only obtain the formal student status after passing an examination. The curriculum is cateqorized into speciaity compulsories, speciaity eiectives, common compuisories and common electives (public courses refer to courses on sociai sciences and foreign languages and physical culture). The portion between compulsories and elective is 73, and the portion between specialty courses and common courses is aiso 73. The totai required credits in 4 years range from 133-138 (another 32 credits for 5 year students), an average of 1620 credits a semester. Students over qrade two will have 3 weeks a semester in which they can select courses of other specialties across the departments.
Currently CAFA has 88 professors and associate professors, 53 Iecturers and neariy one thousand undergraduate and graduate students. The current President is Professor Pan Conqkai, a famous Chinese painting artist and art historian. The current Director of the Academic Committee of CAFA is ProfessorJin Shangyi, a famous oilpainter, who is also a member of the Standinq Committee of NPPCC the Vice Chairman of China Confederation of Art and Literature, and the Chairman of China Artists'Association. The Secretary of CPC CAFA Committee is Comrade Yang Li.
CAFA is the oniy art institution of higher learning directly under the Ministry of Education. In September 200 1, the new campus of CAFA and its affiliated high school, with a land of 200 mu and a building area of 76,000 square mZ in the first stage, was put into operation, providing CAFA with a firstrate infrastructure in international art institutions, and laying a Firm basis for the allround development of CAFA in the new century.
■Department:●The Chinese Painting Department
With a long teaching history and an influential tradition formed by famous masters such Li Keran, Jiang Zhaohe, Ye Qianyu and Li Kuchan, the Chinese Painting Department is very strong in its teaching staff. Its first Director was Prof. Ye Qianyu, former Vice Chairman of the Chinese Artists' Association, member of the Standing Committee of CPPCC and a renowned master in figure painting. Consecutively, other Directors were Ding Jingwen, Li Qi, Huang Renhua, Yao Youduo, and Zhang Lichen. Concurrently,Han Guozhen is the Director, Tian Liming and Wang Shujie are Deputy Directors.
During continual teaching practice,the Chinese Painting Department has formed a modern teaching system and spe-cialty characters conforming to the artistic laws of the Chinese painting, and hastrained a large number of excellent talents,whom Zhou Sicong, Liu Boshu, Liu Dali and Yang Lizhou have been elected Vice Chairman of Chinese Artists' Association. Having international students studying in the department over the years,the Chinese Painting Department plays an important role in disseminating Chinese culture and en-larging the influence of traditional Chinese painting.
●The Oil Painting Department
The Oil Painting Department was one of the earliest teachinq bases for oil painting teaching in China. From the elder generation teachers who studied in Europe and japan in the 1930's and who have a mastery of the traditions in European oil painting to artists who studied in the former Soviet Union in the 50's and to artists who were employed as tutors upon graduation, the Oil Paintinq De-partment is the home of a strong facuity and a team of art creation of several qenerations. The Oil Painting Department have nurtured a great number of underqraduates, graduate and advance students and many of them have become renowned painters, Professors and backbone artists in oil painting and art in China. The faculty and students of the Oil Paintinq Department have produced a great number of works, many of which have evoked a siqnifi-cant impact and have recoqnized as the maq-num opus of the development of oil painting in China.
Currentiy under the Oil Paintinq Depart-ment there are 4 studios, a graduate section and a studio of techniques and materials in the Oil Painting Department, and teaching is studio-based. ●The Printmaking Department
In its history, the Printmaking Department of CAFA had famous professors of Li Hua, Gu Yuan, Wang Qi, Yan Han and Huang Yongyu as teachers,who were experienced art educators with wide influences. Their creation, which is to demonstrate significance, laid a solid foundation for the teach-ing at the Printmaking Department, with which this Department has always maintained a high academic level and played a leading role in China.
The first Director of the Printmaking Department is Prof. Li Hua. From the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, Prof Wu Biduan song Yuanwen, Tan Quanshu and Guangju were directors consecutively. The current Director is Prof Wu Changjiang, and the two Deputies are Associate Prof Su Xinping and Zhou Jirong.
Since its setup, a large group of artists dedicated to printmaking education, old, middle-aged and young, have gathered in the Printmaking Department. They are Li Hua, Gu Yuan, Wang Qi, Yan Han and Huang Yongyu, Zhou Lingzhao, Wu Biduan, Chen Xiaonan Xia Tongguang. lin Shangyi,Pang Tao, Zhan Jianjun, Shao jinkun, Yang Xianrang, Hong Bo, Li Hongren, Sun Cixi, Liang Dong, Luo Erchun, Zhang Dashen, Song Yuanwen, Tan Quanshu, Yang Li, Zhang Peiyi, Zhang Zuoming, Zhou jianfu, Wei Zuyin, Weng Naiqiang, Cuang jun, Wang Weixin, Chen jinrong, Chen Wenji, Xu Bing, Zhang Guilin, Wu Changjiang, Gao Rongsheng, Zhang jun, Shi jihong, Ma Gang, Tan Ping, Chen Qiang, Wen Guozhang, Su Xinping, Wang Huaxiang, Zhou jirong, Liu Liping, Yu Chen, Li Fan, Zhang Ye, Li Xiaolin, Kang liangfei and others.
The spirit of pursuing study seriously and pursuing art sincereiy has been passed down from one generation to another. The teaching and creation of the department is fuli of vitality. Currently the department has a faculty of 16, of whom 8 are Professors and associate Professors.
The Printmaking studios are of woodcut, etching, lithography, silkscreen, photography, tradi-tional print-making and of a graduate teaching group, the latter three were set up in the 1990s.Preparation is under way to set up a printmaking materiais and new technique studio. At present, the teaching for undergraduate, graduate and internationai students is being consistently developed and standardized. In the same time, courses for graduate-equal credentiais, teaching assistant advanced study, and senior advanced study are aiso availabie in the Printmaking Oepartment.
In specialty teaching of the Printmaking Oepartment, students receive technique and creation instructions, with which they acquire knowiedge on the making principie and method of relief printing,intaglio, surface printing and stencil, and possess specialty techniques and artistic skills in printmaking and other fields. Other courses also include composition, photography,computer creation, history of printmaking and printmaking paper materials, with which students get familiar with the characteristics of artistic languages. ''Social Practice ''and ''Graduation Creation'' are the core subjects in the Printmaking Department.
The Printmaking Department emphasizes that students digest modern design ideas and artistic views on the basis of Iearning the national cuiture and inheriting the traditions of printmaking art, encourages the students to go deep into life and concern about the society, and to represent the spirit of the contemporary time. The department stimulates the original spirit of the students, who are expected to have great adaptability after graduation and make contributions to the deveiopment of the country.
●The Mural Painting Department
The Mural Painting Department of CAFA was founded in the tide of China's opening-up and reform and is the first of its kind in China's contemporary higher art academies. The preparation to establish CAFA mural painting Lab started in 1979 under the direction of Prof. Hou Yimin with the invoivement of Mr. LiHuaji, Zhou Lingzhao, Liang Yunqing, Wang Wenbin and Deng Shu. The Lab started to enroll undergraduate and graduate students in 1980, and in 1984, the Department was officially set up. Hou Yimin, Li Huaji and Liang Yunqing were the heads of the department successively and the current Director is Sun jingbo, and the deputies are Li Linzuo and Cao Li.
After its set up, to revitalize the magniFicent historical tradition of the Chinese mural painting, to digest the advantages in modern mural painting and public environment art in other countries of the world,and with consistent summary of experiences and ad-justment of course structure in the practice of teaching,creation and research, a teaching system dedicated to creative teaching, creation and research practice with the characters of our nation.
The foundation courses are drawing, outline drawing, reilef scuipture, color, graphics, structure and coior composition, brief history of mural painting, ba-sics of environment art design.
●The Scuipture Department
The main teaching force of the Sculpture Department were mainly sculptors who had studied in France, such as Wang Linyi, Hua Tianyou, Liu Kaiqu, Zeng Zhushao. In the 1960's, sculptors who studied in the former Soviet Union, including famous sculptors of Qian Shaowu, Wang Keqing, Dong Zuyi, Cao Chunsheng, Situ Zhaoguang and Sheng Yang. In the 1980s and 1990s, new teachers, such as Sun jiabo and Zhang Dasheng are coming to the department consistently.
With the development of contemporary art and the absorption of new ideas and technologies of international art, the Sculpture Department has consistently pursued teaching reform. In the1990s, modern materials language in abstract expressions appeared in teaching gradually.
The objective for teaching sculpture is to nurture sculptors who are equipped with strong basic skills, who have acquired the elementary of modern material languages, and acquired the creation and skills of relief sculptures making, sculptures in apublic environment and even large memorial sculptures. The length of schooling of the Scuipture Department is currently 5 years for undergraduate and 3 years for postgraduate.
At undergraduate level, drawing courses, such as portrait, human body and sketching accounts for 100%; clay sculpture such as head, chest, body; relief sculpture, clothing grain, and small amount of animal drawing, accounts for 32%; materials study accounts for 19%, including relief sculpture composition, altorelievo sculpture composition, portrait, gardening sculpture and memorials.
●The Art History Department
Set up in 1957, the Art History Department of CAFA was the first teaching institution that trains specialty talents in art history and theory, as well as one of the centers for research and international exchanges of art history and theory in China. Prof. Wang Xun was the Chairperson of the preparatory committee of the department, and Prof. jin Weinuo and Xue Yongnian were chairs successively. The currently Chairperson is Prof. Luo Shiping. The Art History Department is qualified for conferring aca-demic degrees including bachelor, master and doctor. Student enrollment includes underqraduate graduate, doctorate students and students for advanced study. The department also receives high-level visiting scholars. With accumulations, the Art History Department now enjoys a reputation among colleagues in China and around the world with a strong faculty, rigorous style of study and standard-ized teaching.
●The Design Department
The Design Department was set up in 1995, and it aims at training design students to acquire creative thinking and practice ability facing the 2 lst century` There are four majors in the Design Department Architectural and Environmental Art, Visual Communication, Products Design and Photography. The department has set up the Model Studio, Materials Studio, Construction Studio,Photography Studio, Pulp Studio, Computer Studio and material room. sased on the need of teaching orientation and development of the specialty, eleven tutor Studios have been setup.
The faculty of the Design Department are mostly middle-aged and young teachers with new knowledqe, active academic ideas and experiences of studying abroad. in supplement, the department also engages a number of overseas schoiars as visiting professors. Prof Zhang saowei was the head of the department, and the current head is Prof. Tan Ping.
Through endeavors and exploration in a few years, the Design Department has formed its new characters in teaching.
The basic courses of the Design Department emphasize the curriculum and training method, which are different from other universities and colleges of China to a iarge extent. Through iarge amounts of training subjects, the students are enlightened and guided to creativeiy understand the relation between art and design, to acquire the master laws of the realistic and abstract ianguages, to form a habit of raising questions and study the thinking methods. The core subjects are basics of natural form, basics of abstract form, basics of formation, basics of material experiment, composition practice.
The teaching content of the Architecturai and Environmental Art majors relies on composition design, but extending outward to living quarter pianning and public environmentai design, and extending to interior andproducts design. It differs from the architectural major at an engineering institute,in which the courses of engineering, mechanics and physics are suppressed while the training of environment, architecture and interior desiqn are strengthened, and for the major of environmentai art in an art academy, the ability of process designing that integrates the environment and architec-ture and interior design are strengthened. The length of schooling of the department is 5 years. The core courses are space training, architecturai design, exterior environmental design, interior design and history of design of China and foreign countries.
The visual communication major focuses on guiding the students to pay attention to the study of practice of modern design concepts, master methods for printing output, and stresses the integration of design with cuiture, technology and art. The iength of schooling is 4 years. The core courses are book design, poster design, exhibition space design, package design, VI design and advertisement design .
The Products Design major focuses on the research of the relation between products and spirituai life forms of expression, and studies the originailty, foresightedness of the products and market and marketing as a whoie. The students are trained to possess the ability of creative thinking andpartici-pating in the whole design process. With the deveiopment of the Design Department and an increasing demand for modern design taients, CAFA has decided to set up a school of design. On the basis of the existing Design Department, the school will establish new teaching mechanism, set up new courses and majors, expand enrollment, and to maintain the teaching charac-teristics and the trend of sustainable deveiopment of CAFA with new ideas and new operational mood.
●The High School of Fine Arts of CAFA
The High School of Fine Arts was established in 1953. In 1954, Mr. Ding jingwen, the first prin-cipal paid a visit to the former Soviet Union with the Chinese Art Education Delegation, making inves-tigation on the education experiences of affiliated art schools of the art academies in Moscow and Leningrad, bringing back their students' works and teaching syllabus. The visit had a great impact on and laid a firm foundation for the High School of Fine Arts and other affiliated art schools of art academies in China that followed Over the year, the High School of Fine Arts has trained more than 1,300 students, most of whom either become excellent university students or middie-level art talents with firm basic training, wide scope of knowledge and strong adaptability.
The length of schooling of High School of Fine Arts is 4 years. The basic thinking in the curriculum is:to emphasize the basics, emphasize the study of general courses, emphasized the understanding of literature and art, try to cultivate the students to concern about the society, observe life and nature, form the habit of artistic thinking, and to nurture living, fresh and cute artistic sense and artistic creation ability. The special subjects include drawing, sketching, color, creation, design, perspective, anatomy, Chinese Painting and calligraphy. For high-grade students, optional subjects such as Chi-nese painting, oil painting, fresco, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design and environment design are vailable. The teaching materials of ordinary secondary schools are used in general courses, and the literal courses such as Chinese, history, geography, English and politics are the focus of study, and low-grade students will have courses in math, physics and chemistry. Social art practice are arranged on the second and fourth year of study, and included in the fourth year practice are investigations on traditional culture.
●The Aduit Education Division
On the basis of training education over many years, to give full play of teaching advantages,meet the demand of the society and serve the objective of lifelong education, adult academic level study courses started in 2000, and the preparation to set up the Adult Education Oivision is under way. Currently about 10 fulltime and part-time teachers, divided into two teaching sections of draw-ing and design, teach for adult education.
